Sydney Film Festival – Toomelah

Continuing the winter ‘arts’ season in Sydney, there is the Sydney Film Festival. We thought we’d better check something out – and being Pommies we decided we’d better watch something Australian (to help us understand how Australia works 🙂 )

The film we went to see was called Toomelah, and it was set in an Aboriginal community on the NSW/Queensland border. It was an interesting film – a bit depressing in a way. The director and some of the cast came on stage at the end (It was a film festival after all!) and explained that to a lot of people, it was just how daily life was – nothing to be depressed about.

The venue was the State Theatre, which is extremely magestic and old. Heritage listed no less – and the Film Festival has been held there since 1974.

YES – they do have old buildings in Australia (just not *really* old ones) …
